Surgeon Video Review

MSQC Video Review Program for Laparoscopic Colectomy

MSQC endeavors to help surgeons become better surgeons and we have expanded our efforts in surgical quality improvement into measuring surgical technique.  We utilize an approach first described by John Birkmeyer in the New England Journal of Medicine (2013), which de-identifies the surgeon so that peer reviewers are able to objectively grade technical skill.  At the same time, to ensure objective feedback, the submitting surgeon does not know the identity of the peer reviewers.

We use an evaluation tool validated for laparoscopic right colectomy by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).  In addition to completing peer reviews using our video review application, participating surgeons will be invited to attend live video review feedback sessions featuring group and 1-to-1 discussion in regards to specific surgery elements of their choosing.  This is an excellent opportunity for any surgeon performing laparoscopic colectomy surgery to improve their own skills and help peers around the state!
